Saturday 20th April – Little walk then travelling – cloudy then rain.

Mag went for a walk while I got ready in the morning, along the towpath to where the lock takes boats onto the other canal and back along the higher canal which leads to the aquaduct. There was a beautiful mill and house (for sale too)!. Walked on past the marie and back to the van. We did it together after breakfast. We really like this place :) Set off to travel further south stopping at the Super U for some supplies. Walked around a nature reserve – the Reserve Naturelle du Val de Loire at Pouilly sur Loire. Nice walk lots of lovely flowers but not many birds. Did see a great snail and some trees which had been gnawed to a point and on the point of falling down! Beavers??? Had our lunch in the village at a parking spot on the river. Loads of birds here! Carried on through Nevers (got a bit lost), on past Moulin then turned off into a green bit on the map just west of Vichy and finally stopped in the car park for the Cascades ……………………… nearArfeuilles but it is raining:( Had a drink and a pastry (bang goes that diet!), dozed and read then played phase 10 (Mag won!), had omelette and mash for tea. The mash has all gone so no more left overs:) Ate far too many biscuits with coffee too!

Sunday 21 April – walk **** Cassade de la Pisserote - cloudy

We woke to cloud but no rain :) It was 5 degrees outside! We walked down to the cascade after breakfast and it was a lovely path down – through the village, past ponds, through mixed woods of fir, larch and beech. The path eventually arrived at a bridge just below the waterfall where I took my favourite slowed down water photos and Mag had a wander up into the woods. Just as Mag was coming back when I dropped the hood of my camera into the fast flow of the river! That’s the third to disappear in similar circumstances! I took it very well and we continued our scramble up to the top of the waterfall and found a marked path. We throught it was the 3hour circular walk on a map in the car park but when we eventually got back discovered that that walk didn’t even go to the waterfall! Ours was great though, it took us past an old derelict water mill (Moulin de Mas) and through the farm with all the cherolet cows and calves. It was quite a long trek back along the road but we could see the van from a long way away! Got back and I filled all the water up from the eau potable pipe and we had lunch. Set off abour 3 and drove through beautiful countryside and lots more cows until we met with the river Loire again. We followed this down as our map said there were some gorges. The whole river has been damned up and turned into a reservoir along here so the gorges have been flooded but it is a beautiful road. There were lots of parking spaces and we thought we would stop in one of them but just as we turned the corner there was a beautiful chateau jutting out into the water! It is the Chateau de la Roche and used to cling to the side of the gorge. We stopped in the car park and had a walk right up to the door (you only had to pay to go in) and looked over into the water then walked around the grounds. Found a perfect parking space down a dead end leading to a slipway which overlooks the chateau across the water. We went back and got the van and parked here for the night you can just see the van in the reflection picture bottom right.. Beautiful spot and quite unbelievable that we got to park here. Had tea and the usual evening of reading, diaries and cards :)
